A polypectomy is a procedure used to remove polyps from the inside of the colon, also called the large intestine. A polyp is an abnormal collection of tissue. The procedure is relatively noninvasive and is usually carried out at the same time as a colonoscopy.
While most polyps are often not associated with symptoms, large polyps can cause rectal bleeding, abdominal pain and bowel irregularities.
As a polypectomy is usually coupled with a colonoscopy, bowel preparation is usually required. Bowel preparation involves emptying the bowels in order for the doctor to get a clear view of the colon.
